We saw in the previous chapter a hint that Yamato also has some type of transformation ability. I assumed she ate some sort of Oni Devil Fruit, but that may not be the case. Like her father, she too could be part dragon.
In a previous theory video I explained my belief that as an Eastern style dragon, Kaido’s inability to be killed may be in part derived from incredibly good fortune.
Whether Kaido is a human who ate a mythical zoan or an actual dragon, the good fortune factor may be at work.
We see this chapter another ability rooted in real world myths and folklore – flight using flame clouds – attributed to Kaido being a dragon. As is also true for Marco, whose phoenix flames possess a healing and restorative property, the powers of mythical creatures and Zoan users in One Piece are often heavily based on the real-world myths and folk stories by which they are inspired.
I do believe there is good evidence for this in the narrative. Kaido’s introduction box reads, “In a one on one fight, always bet on Kaido.” Hawkins agrees to join Kaido on the basis that the odds are overwhelmingly in Kaido’s favor. And if I haven’t convinced you yet, consider that Kaido’s underlings as well as the upper echelon of the subsidiary Donquixote Family have names themed after card games or, in other words, games of chance.
What this could mean is that good fortune, often associated with Eastern style dragons, is in part responsible for keeping Kaido alive for all these years. In my theory video, I mentioned the idea that Momonosuke’s artificial zoan may be the key to finally ending Kaido’s winning streak if he has been similarly been imbued with good fortune. I think that this chapter provides further evidence that this may in fact be the case as yet another of Kaido’s abilities seemingly parallel Momonosuke. Which means Wano’s future Shogun may be the key to its liberation.
I imagine we’ll soon see a backstory explaining Kaido’s motivating desire to start a global war, Yamato’s childhood, and her connection to Ace. It’s really amazing how little we still know about Kaido at this point in the story arc.
