On the surface, Yamato thinks and behaves like Oden, she expresses a desire to be free from her dad and Onigashima, and wishes to have an adventure as Oden did. But what if Yamato’s dream is much deeper than it seems and could only be fulfilled by travelling the seas?
Chapter 1024-2105 showed us Yamato’s backstory as the child of an oppressive Yonko. It was ingrained in her that any friends she makes, any person who shows her compassion (like the Daimyos, Ace, the mysterious guard who fed her) will eventually die, because she’s different from them.
Yamato has spent 20 years alone trying to prove her father wrong and show him that she is strong because she had people believing in her and not because she is a child of Kaido, but was unable to.
The more she fights, the more she struggles to escape from her father’s shadow and Oden’s logbook became increasingly more important to Yamato as a guiding path in life.
Maybe the part of Oden’s journey that appeals to Yamato the most is not his desire for freedom, but it is how Oden had managed to get people to accept him as who he is and had loyal vassals who completely trusted and believed in him.
Maybe Yamato wishes to become Oden because Oden had what she lacks: Comeradeship.
I believe that Yamato’s true motivation to sail the seas is to be with the people who she can call a comrade and prove to her father and also to the world that it is a source of her strength.
I’m sure Yamato roleplay will end soon. Once she sees the grown Momonosuke, who seems to resemble his father now, there will be no further point in impersonating Oden, which will give her the chance to actually grow as character herself. Momonosuke will fulfill his father’s dream of opening up Wano, then Yamato will have the chance to pursue her own dreams.
