The World Government was formed, and they performed a great ritual where they trapped the souls of the devils they had massacred into two great trees, The Sunlight Tree Eve, and the Treasure Tree Adam (kind of like how the Shandarians performed a tree ritual for their deceased).
The fruits they bore, carried the souls of the deceased devils, and with them also their wills. They cursed them to always be trapped, unable to move on and find rest, because their abilities were useful to the humans. Poseidon then cursed the ocean to not allow anyone who ate of the devils’ souls to move once they entered it.
The aftermath of such an event was that humans took control of the world, and started erasing any trace of the race they had committed genocide upon. They forbade research on the void century, claiming the people who did so were only interested in reviving the ancient weapons capable of destroying the world.
However, the Family of D, lead by Joy Boy, survived, and through the generations the D. initial was carried on, as was their will. In the hope that one day humans would see beyond their xenophobia, and that their race would see restoration and being freed from the curse of the fruits.
You know, when I wrote this, I realized how this story is kind of exactly a mirror of Luffy’s own journey. He is proud to call himself a pirate, even though most people hate pirates, and are very distrusting of them, because of the kind of pirate that plunders and kills. It’s not until they actually meet Luffy’s kind of pirate that they are able to see the nuances within the pirate world. Not everyone who flies a pirate flag is evil, it can mean freedom and adventure too.
In the same way, I think the story will move towards a resolution for the devil race, who has been demonized and forgotten, and a restoration not only for them, but for all the other races the humans have looked down upon as well. The xenophobia of the Celestial Dragons will be challenged, and maybe even a few of them, like Donquixote Mjosgard, the green haired Celestial Dragon that punches Saint Charlos at the Reverie, will step out of their indoctrinated, narrow-minded view and embrace the other races as equals. That not all “D”s are like Blackbeard, and just because there are a few bad ones, doesn’t mean you should judge them all.
And once it’s all said and done, the shattered world will be in One Piece. I think that would be a fitting ending for a story all about a crew misunderstood by most, living for their dreams and freedom.
