Chapter 1000 is an incredible milestone for Oda, the series, and for us fans. Luffy’s incredible calmness and resolve in front of seemingly impossible odds are what we love about Luffy.
The Red Roc and the sequence of events reminded me of his encounter with the Pacifistas during the Return to Sabaody arc in chapter 601.
The Pacifistas were a force to be reckoned with and Luffy, unknown to the people at the time, casually dodges the lasers and punches the Pacifista from the air with am upgraded Gear 2 Pistol. Showing the pirates and marines that he is Straw Hat Luffy reminding the world that this is the man who will be King of the Pirates. He is back and about to show the world what he is made of.
Chapter 1000 plays a similar scene but with greater stakes. Luffy casually dodges Kaido’s strike and from above strikes him with a brand new technique that shocks Big Mom.
Kaido who was unstoppable is now shook. He has shown the biggest names in the New World what he is made of and he is a pirate worthy of his name, evident by the call back to Shanks putting Luffy’s hat on implying he has become a great pirate.
