For this theory to be true we need to dig into what Ohara was about and what might have been the drive for Kuzan. We know that Ohara was this “demonic” island in the eyes of the World Government that practiced forbidden studies on history of the World.
Ohara were aware of this fact and thus they isolated themselves and they tried to protect the sholars. This went well for years…decades…centuries, but then the World Government finally eradicated Ohara from existence. The Buster Call happened.
Looking back, this could have been a scenario that could have been foreseen. Ohara learned alot about the life of the world’s ancestors, they researched history refering to the Void Century and the Ancient Kingdom. I think Ohara was aware of informations about how the world kept the balance back then and how it was broken. A sensible spot indeed. And thus Ohara has been a viable target for the World Government.
If I am correct, then Kuzan as child has been told stories about an ancient justice and this could have inspired his way. He became strong, and he became a marine in order to protect the secrets of Ohara and have them be passed onto future generations.
FORESHADOWINGS
We all remember the secene where Saul confronted Kuzan and they had their exchange about justice and the Buster Call.
What is fascinating is that according to my theory Kuzan had to play a role and supress his past to keep his undercover role as navy. As if he were a real ex civillian of Ohara then he would like to help in this situation but he can’t because of his duty as vice-admiral. This is proving the fact that Saul was the opposite. He deflected his position as Vice Admiral. Him doing this foreshadows another possible hint I will come to later.
But to prove this we can find one critical scene where Kuzan is out of his usual character…a so called “Character Break”.
It was shown when Sakazuki’s ship attacked evacuation ships. So the fact Kuzan was in his character was because there were actually evacuation ships saving citizen. If he himself couldn’t stop the Buster Call, he could easily have people escape. This happened because Sakazuki is forming the opposing, the antagonistic force and justice to Ohara. The Absolute Justice opposed Ohara and Kuzan has a moment of share with Ohara here. This is the biggest foreshadowing to the fact that Kuzan’s justice is possibly belonging to Ohara and their studies. Kuzan having this emotional character break sides him with Ohara.
Later on he took out Saul, he somehow spares him an even more brutal death and he saves Nico Robin. Something he will never regret. Only by the time he might figure out his true success.
So this foreshadows us the Character Arc’s essence, about failing and success.
Kuzan failed to save Ohara, he failed to take down Akainu, he also spare the Straw Hats, in a metaphorical way he failed his marine duty. When will his success come?
By this time he must have the will to take revenge for what happens, and this could be his biggest motivational trigger to oppose Akainu. Akainu’s misdecision, Ohara’s destruction, wrong justice in lead. It is tied together aswell, same as the reasons for Ohara’s downfall, the same reasons can be found in Kuzan’s character.
As we know what Kuzan’s character arc is about, his character arc will end with success, and I believe it aligned with taking revenge for Ohara and protecting Nico Robin from more evil.
This why he joined the Blackbeard Pirates for 2 reasons:
- Blackbeard is close to finding out valuable informations. Kuzan could get his hands on those informations and give them Luffy/Robin later on.
- Blackbeard plans to attack the navy and this would be beneficial for the Ohara revenge plot.
Everything makes more sense the deeper we go into this. Now we know why Kuzan had a reason to chase the Straw Hats literally onto the Paradise. And following up that we learned about Nico Robin. Back then Oda knew where he would go with that character. In the end Kuzan is the key to pass a certain better justice onto the new generation, because his justice might be the closest one to how it used to be when there was a balance between the Ancient Kingdom and the other Kingdoms.
Sideplot: REVOLUTIONARIES
Back to the point where I said there is more to Jaguar D. Saul than we might have anticipated. He was to set to deflect the marines, and it gave me the impression that he might be partnered with someone else. I am touching the sensible topic of Monkey D. Dragon back then being affilated with the Navy or secrent agencies himself and this could have been the roots of creation of the Revolutionary Army. From what we know is that the Revolutionary Army was found 19-26 years ago, somewhere inbetween Luffy’s birth and Roger’s death. 22 years ago Ohara got destroyed so I think this could have been a point of interest for the Revolutionary back then even if they were in their beginnings, right?
So Saul mysteriously drifted to Ohara and we should ask us several questions:
- Why is he there in first line?
- If he knows about a Buster Call, why is he not warning everyone?
- Why is he acting all undercover?
- What is the Agenda?
One could say he is there to pay Olivia a visit. But other questions can easily be solved.
Saul must be a good actor infront of Robin, not sharing informations about himself, he obviously asked for a town to confirm for himself that he landed on Ohara.
This let me think that someone send him to Ohara because this certain someone got fed with the information of the Navy setting up a Buster Call on Ohara.
And yes hear me out, I believe that someone was Monkey D. Dragon. I believe Jaguar D. Saul was a member of the Revolutionaries and he was sent to this Kamikaze mission on Ohara. Maybe Kuma helped out in this case.
This justified why he did what he did. His main goal was saving children or important persons on Ohara. Sadly he and Akainu both crossed their ways undercover without knowing about each others undercover plans. I believe if both knew about each other’s undercover plan, then both would have teamed up to take down the Buster Call fleet.
I believe that this could be perfectly used to build up Kuzan into the Revolutionary Army plotline and have him backstab Blackbeard for eventually this moment.
Kuzan can pay Saul a tribute that way or even bring him back to life, it all depends but the story isn’t finished there, even if Saul might be finished arcwise.
In short: Kuzan could be another “survivor” from Ohara, his justice might be inspired by studies from Ohara and he was undercover to protect Ohara but he failed. Kuzan’s final character arc will be about failing and success and he is Nico Robin’s closest ally in the story!
