Robin’s face in the latest chapter made me happy for a weird reason.
Oda makes his female characters mostly very attractive — usually when they aren’t, it is itself a punchline or they are not very important characters (like Boa’s Gorgon Sisters).
There have definitely been some great exceptions, like Big Mom and a few of her many daughters, who aren’t pretty and just rock it in the One Piece world. But contrast this to the male characters, who are super varied and really weird looking sometimes, or who even though they are usually attractive still have inelegant or straight up ugly moments on a regular basis.
I think this is the first time I’ve seen Oda make Robin look anything other than perfectly poised and sexy.
And it was great. It made her so much cooler in my books, it really elevated her as a character — she’s not just a femme fatale, she’s a deeper, multifaceted woman who isn’t perfect and who reacts with the same powerful reactions as her male nakamas.
I don’t know if anyone else feels this way about the manga, but I always appreciate when Oda designs female characters who aren’t sexy, or makes a pretty one do something not pretty. Just thought I’d share, considering that in chapter 921 when Kinemon gave Nami the really skimpy kunoichi outfit many people also felt that it was a little “eh”.
I would have liked Nami to be a funny handkerchief-on-her-head ninja more than a sexy pin-up ninja, and I think some others here agreed a bit with my feelings.
