Oda’s symbolic use of Fire and Lightning

Attacks in One Piece are sometimes more than just attacks. We just saw this happen in chapter 1,000 and I think Oda put some details that will be fun to pay attention to in the fight that’s about to happen.

What I’m getting at here is Oda’s use of Fire and Lightning being more than just those elements (Big Mom has both of these but we’ll wrap back around to that).

1-Lets start with Fire:

Oda’s use of fire is often a representation of Passion. Luffy’s attack on Kaido in chapter 1,000 was just shown with flames. I think it’s more important to recognize what those flames represent than just the idea that Luffy’s fists are on fire.

This attack is a continuation on Red Hawk, an attack Luffy made in honor of his brother. Those flames he just hit Kaido with are a continuation of Ace’s Passion.

Last time Luffy used Red Hawk was against Hold em because what Hold em was doing ignited Luffy’s Passion. This new hit was done with a Passion ignited in Luffy.

Sanji’s leg also can catch of fire because of his passion. I’ll talk about this more in a bit, but it goes to show this idea has been around for a while.

It will be interesting to see if any of Kaido’s attack have any fire, as in does he have any passion left. We know he’s been trying to die for a while, the exact details are currently developing. But back in Marineford Akainu gave us the line “My magma burns hotter than your fire” as a reason he could burn Ace. This, I think, is less about what specific temperature his magma is, more about saying Akainu has more passion than Ace that moment. Ace had earlier resigned to death before, and Akainu’s saying his own will is stronger because he’s been focused on killing Ace from the start. If Kaido lost the passion like Ace did, fire may not be in his move set.

Going into this main fight it’s going to be interesting to see which attacks use fire as an indication of passion.

Oda’s Symbolism in Chapter 1000

Chapter 1000 is closely related to the Clan of D., Ancient Kingdom and the One Piece!
