Twenty-six years before the start of the story, Gol D. Roger came down with an incurable disease. He decided to pitch one last journey with his right-hand man Silver Rayleigh and with his crew into the Grand Line.
One of the most powerful opponents Roger faced on his journey was the “Hero of the Marines” Monkey D. Garp (one of the most powerful Marines of his generation along with Sengoku and Tsuru) which is said to have cornered him many times on the journey.
Garp attempted to kill Roger several times, but both men respected one another to the point that Roger trusted him as he would trust any member of his own crew.

O: Of course I always wear a One Piece whenever I’m working. Rayleigh is 78. As a sort of a bonus, Roger is 77, Garp 78, Sengoku 79, and Tsuru 76. [*Oda probably meant Roger would currently be 77 if he was still alive.]
