The Reason to Show the Fight
The long awaited reveal of the Devil Fruits of Blackbeard’s crew was great to see, however, I think it only exists as a setup for something bigger. That something bigger being the secret of how Blackbeard managed to eat two Devil Fruits and just what is it that is weird about his body.
Remember, the person who brought up Blackbeard having a weird body was Marco – a doctor, and it just so happens that the person who Blackbeard is currently fighting is Law – a doctor; a doctor who has variety of abilities, that would be perfect tool to bring this secret to light. The reason I am so certain is because in SBS 48, Oda has stated that once a certain professor makes their appearance, we will learn what Devil Fruits really are. In Chapter 1061, that certain Professor made their appearance, in an arc happening concurrently as the Blackbeard fight.
What the Reveal Is
The way Oda likes to write reveals is to throw in a bunch of seemingly unrelated information that would eventually be tied in with a singular reveal. Think about Luffy’s Devil Fruit; in the same conversation where we learn about Sun God Nika, we also learn that there is something more than meets the eye about Luffy’s Devil Fruit (Chapter 1017). The same applies here. In the same Arc where we will learn what Devil Fruits really are, from Doctor Vegapunk, it’s only natural to also learn the secret behind a person eating multiple Devil Fruits.
At Marineford we learned from a Doctor, Marco, that there is something weird about Teach’s body that might be how he was able to eat two Devil fruits and now, Teach is fighting another Doctor who has an ability to scan the body of his enemies. Not only that, but Vegapunk is also a Doctor who performed experiments on Kuma, someone with strong body and someone who is from a “special race”.
Oda Even Makes Sure to Repeat That He is From a Special Race
I think Teach is also from this special race which is why he was captured and eventually experimented by Vegapunk, resulting into him being able to eat two (and more) Devil Fruits. All roads lead to Vegapunk…
