The Players that are gonna turn the tide of the Battle of Onigashima!

Advertisements

We’re immersed deep into the raid on Onigashima, yet it seems everyone is overlooking the real players that are gonna turn the tide of battle. The true force in this battle is this trio right here. That’s right, Nami, Tama and Usopp.

I present to you Cloudy with a Chance of Dangos:

First I would like to review the inspiration of Tama’s powers and the method she uses them. It’s a combination of two Japanese folktales:

  • 1-Momotaro

Here’s a quick summary of Momotaro (emphasis mine):

Momotarō was born from a giant peach, which was found floating down a river by an old, childless woman who was washing clothes there. The woman and her husband discovered the child when they tried to open the peach to eat it. The child explained that he had been bestowed by the Gods to be their son. The couple named him Momotarō, from momo (peach) and tarō (eldest son in the family). When he matured into adolescence, Momotarō left his parents to fight a band of Oni (demons or ogres) who marauded over their land, by seeking them out in the distant island where they dwelled (a place called Onigashima or “Demon Island”). En route, Momotarō met and befriended a talking dog, monkey and pheasant, who agreed to help him in his quest in exchange for a portion of his rations (kibi dango or “millet dumplings”). At the island, Momotarō and his animal friends penetrated the demons’ fort and beat the band of demons into surrendering. Momotarō and his new friends returned home with the demons’ plundered treasure and the demon chief as a captive.

The parallels are pretty obvious. Momotaro goes to Onigashima to defeat the demons with the help of a Dog (Komachiyo), a Monkey (Hihimaru) and a pheasant (yet to be seen). Momotaro is able to ally with them by giving them Kibi Dango, which is how Tama tames them in our story.

  • 2-Kobutori Jiisan

Here’s a quick summary of Kobutori Jiisan (emphasis mine again):

There was an old man with a lump (or wen) on the right side of his face. Ozaki’s translation describes the lump to be “like a tennis-ball”, while the Spanish translation makes the lump to be the size of a peach (Spanish: melocotón).

One day he went into the mountain to cut wood, and was caught in the rain. He took refuge in the hollow of a tree. He was soon to witness a gathering of strange beings nearby, some one-eyed and some mouth-less. They were the oni (demons or ogres; “devils” being the Christendom equivalent).

The oni created a great bonfire as light as day. They began to drink sake wine, sing and dance. They old man overcame his fears and was lured to join the dance. The greatly entertained oni wanted him to return the next day (or “always”) for an encore. To ensure the old man’s return, the oni wanted to keep custody of some valuable possession, and of all things, decided the old man’s lump should be taken as pledge. They then proceed to remove the unwanted tumor. The old man was elated to find the lump gone, with not a remnant of it remaining, and no soreness in the cheek where it was removed.

There lived next door an old man who had a big lump on his left cheek. When he heard his neighbor’s story about losing the lump, he wanted to emulate, and therefore asked to take the place of performing in front of the oni, and the neighbor yielded him the opportunity. The left-lump old man went to the same tree hollow, and when the oni assembled, the chief demon was particularly eagerly awaiting. Unfortunately, the left-lump old man did not have the same level of skill in the art of dancing, and was a disappointment to the demons, who bid him to take back his lump and leave. And the demons slapped on (or threw) the piece of flesh which stuck to the clean side of his face, and this old man returned home chagrined, now with two lumps on his face.

The parallels here being that the man has a lump on the right side of his face, which is removed and kept by the ogres who were enamored by him. Tama removes her Kibi Dango’s from her right cheek to enamor animals and gifters. The great bonfire and singing and dancing is represented by the fire festival currently ongoing in Onigashima.

Now that we have that background info here’s how its gonna go down:

  • Tama has prepared a bunch of Dango in advance and brought them with her to Onigashima. Nami will use her Clima-Tact to carry the Kibi Dango above the forces fighting below. As you recall, it now has abilities like Milky Ball, that produces clouds thick enough to hold solid objects.

  • Nami will then make them rain down from above on the enemy.
  • Our sniper Usopp will then use a technique akin to the one on Dressrosa where he got Sugar to get scared as shit and open her mouth wide. He’ll shoot this giant distraction above the battlefield and all of the soldiers will have their mouths agape in shock.
  • The dangos will then rain down into their mouths, taking control of any SMILE users (maybe even actual Zoans too, we don’t know if that works yet).
  • You thought CP-0 was playing Go? Nah bruh they’re actually playing Othello, that one board game you didn’t understand as a kid with black and white pieces and you can turn your enemies pieces into your own. Hundreds of Gifters have now been flipped from Black to White, the tide of the war has changed, the battle can be won.

Thats Cloudy with a Chance of Dangos baby!
