Many are marveling at how strong Big Mom is in her current form due to her amnesia. That’s fine…she is strong. However, something I feel is constantly being misunderstood is this notion that she’s doing it all without Devil Fruit or Haki…
Well, actually I think it’s HIGHLY, HIGHLY unlikely that Big Mom is not using Haki. Allow me to elaborate.
In Whole Cake Island, during Bege’s explaination of the assassination plan, Bege tells us about how Big Mom when emotionally shook from the Mother Caramel photo falls to her knees and scuffs them up. She begins to bleed merely from falling to her knees. Okay…how? Sure she’s emotionally unhinged, but would that truly make someone who can tank cannon fire bleed just from dropping to her knees? That’s as big a difference in power as there is between a throwing a rock and throwing a feather! Could being sad make her that much weaker? Even if you try to argue it could be muscle vs fat, that’d be wrong too since in crying hysterics like she was she was completely tensed up.
Which means that it’s likely Haki. Haki loosely translates to “ambition, will power, drive, spirit, vigor and aspiration”. When becoming an emotional wreck…it makes complete sense that these things would be lacking. Which means that it’s not specifically Big Mom’s natural strength that’s unbelievable (although it is too), but more likely she’s been unconsciously using Haki since she was born.
Unconsciously using Haki is kind of crazy when you think about it, but it makes a ton of sense and explains why she’s so invincible looking, and why without any memory and with a mind reverted to a child she can still curb stomp a Yonko Commander. Big Mom likely uses Haki at ALL TIMES. When she’s fighting, when she’s eating…when she’s sleeping…even just by breathing.
Quick pointer I’d like to make. I’m not saying Big Mom doesn’t still use basic and Advanced Armament Haki still like when she blocked Luffy’s Gear Fourth attack. She still does, but that’s her putting effort into using Haki. She’s consciously using that Haki. I’m just saying that beyond when she consciously uses Haki, she is always unconsciously using some as well.
