VINSMOKE REIJU’S MYSTERIOUS DEVIL FRUIT

Advertisements

Vinsmoke Reiju. Looking at her, She didn’t seem different than any other Vinsmoke family. She have the same curly eyebrows, specific power-color name alias (poison pink), and using matching themed raid suit.

But the difference seem clear when you check her wiki page: Reiju has a yet to be named Devil Fruit of an unknown type. To prove this statement, i’m checking one piece magazine vol.1 (Devil fruit encylopedia) at page 109. (her name is in highlight).

So i want to predict her devil power abilities based on what we know so far about her. Let’s start from examining her design:

Her design didn’t change much from the start, except the little sketch in the middle show Oda seem want to give her antennae (?). It’s clear from the design Oda takes inspiration from butterfly. The strange thing is, the eyespot pattern in her wings didn’t fit her power! Because most butterflies with eyespot didn’t have poison in them.

This made me curious to look for butterfly that inspired her design and have poison to fit her abilities. And i found.. Pipevine swallowtail:

Battus philenor, the pipevine swallowtail or blue swallowtail, is a swallowtail butterfly found in North America and Central America. The butterflies are black with iridescent-blue hindwings. They are found in many different habitats, but are most commonly found in forests. The black or red caterpillars feed on Aristolochia species, making them poisonous as both larvae and adults, while the adults feed on the nectar of a variety of flowers.

This is the similarities that Reiju have with this butterfly:

Design

From design perspective, there’s quite similarities between two, like wing shapes (swallowtail) and circle pattern. The color quite similar too (black-blue to black-purple), i guess the color changed to match pink aesthetic Reiju have.

Poison

Like monarch butterfly, they used to eat poison when they in caterpillar form, that’s why they’re poisonous. This could answer why Reiju spread her wings after she finish eating poison in Luffy’s body, It’s mimicking the way butterfly spread their wing’s after emerging from their shell.

And pipevine swallow deters predators by secreting the liquid toxin through a gland on its abdomen. Sounds familiar?

So her attack probably involved speed (because pipevine swallowtail can fly very fast) and poison secretion.

Social Life

This thing that i found uniquely similar. Somehow, Reiju’s way to behave since childhood similar to how pipevine swallowtail defence mechanism: tasting bad is not the only defense that the pipevine swallowtail butterfly has. Once the larvae hatch from the eggs, they remain together feeding as a group. As the larvae get older, they split off and feed alone, but by then their bodies have the visual clues that tell predators the larvae should not be messed with.

That’s all I can conclude from what i’ve seen in the latest chapter. Hope we could see more of her in the future.
