In Punk Hazard and Dressrosa, his role was to be a dependable crewmate for Luffy. His fights vs Monet and Pica never materialized from a place of personal emotional investment.

For the first time after his training with Mihawk, he is emotionally charged.

I know Zoro is always serious but I feel like it’s just a different kind of serious in Wano. From the beginning of the arc, he’s been getting emotionally connected to all these citizens like Tonoyasu and Hiyori in a way I never felt him before.

He feels for these people as if he was the one who suffered under Kaido and Orochi. And it’s honestly great.
