Ever since it was revealed that Sanji had a secret past, people have been speculating that Zoro might have some famous heritage revealed in Wano. After all, at this point Luffy has a famous family and Sanji has a famous family. But I think the trend stops here.
The key difference is that we know Zoro’s full name. Roronoa Zoro. Unless Oda goes so far as to revoke Zoro’s name and say he’s got a different surname entirely, it’s safe to say that Zoro’s family isn’t famous.
With Luffy we got the reveal about his famous family when it made sense. After Enies Lobby when we were starting to learn more about the world it was logical that at that point we learn who the “Monkey D’s” are.
With Sanji, Oda had to keep the last name “Vinsmoke” hidden otherwise it would be weird that no one would make a big deal about him being from that family.
But with Zoro is different, we have reached over 900 chapters of the manga and no one has said a damn thing about the “Roronoas”. At this point, it would make no sense if the name “Roronoa” was actually some famous family and not a single character had commented on it so far. So I would conclude that Zoro really is just a nobody coming from a family of “Roronoas” who are also not significant in the grand scheme of things.
Personally I don’t mind Zoro getting a fleshed out backstory, but giving him royal lineage seems way too clichè, and especially repetitive after Sanji. He might be connected in some way to Wano, but I hope Oda puts an interesting twist on it instead of the hackneyed “long lost true Prince of the Kingdom” trope.
A nobody becoming the World’s Strongest Swordsman with hard work and willpower alone seems far more badass than him following in the footsteps of his ancestors. My issue with some Zoro-Wano connection theories is that they seem to diminish what Zoro has and will accomplish. Zoro’s theme should be that anybody can accomplish anything if they work hard enough, regardless of the bloodline.
